Sojan the Swordsman also known as Sojan Shieldbearer, is an aspect of the Eternal Champion. He fights with a sword and a pneumatic gun similar in function to the Needle Gun used by Jerry Cornelius. He used to be a human named Sir John until John was killed in combat on Earth and resurrected on Zylor with a new name, a new identity, and no memory of his past.
Sojan is distinguished by his use of a shield, an armament unheard of on planet Zylor. Other warriors often mock Sojan as a coward for his use of a shield, until it's effectiveness in defense coupled with Sojan's skill in combat silences them.
Sojan was one of Moorcock's first literary creations. His first appearance in published fiction even predates Elric's.
