Being Corum's double, the Karach would've looked almost identical to him
The Karach is a doppelganger of Corum Jhaelen Irsei. It appeared in the story The Sword and the Stallion.
The Karach was created by the Wizard Calatin in order to turn the mabden against Corum so it could take his place. It led various attacks against them, leading the madben to believe that Corum had betrayed them and allied himself with the Fhoi Myore.
The Karach is identical to Corum in appearance to detail, down to his missing eye, prosthetic hand and armor, as well as the Vadhagh scarlet robe Corum gave to Calatin in The Bull and the Spear. However, it seems like the Karach possesses no true personality of it's own, instead most likely acting on Calatin's orders. Karach was ultimately slain by Corum.
Trivia[]
- In the Oak and the Ram, it's mentioned that Calatin at one point wanted to obtain Corum's cadaver, which would imply that creating the Karach was most likely a secondary option, and that Calatin's original intention was to use Corum himself to execute his plans.
- Silver is deadly to the Karach, hence why his prosthetic hand is made from a metal that resembles silver.
- Karach is said to be a changeling, which is another nod to the Irish and Celtic mythologies massively incorporated in the Silver hand trilogy.
- Karach is the second (or third) character to appear as Corum's double, the first being a mabden warrior from one of Mabelode's planes, (and the other possibly being a Vadhagh named Gerane, summoned by Lady Jane Pentallyon). Unlike the mabden warrior, who resembled Corum by coincidence, Karach's design was deliberate.
