The Horn of Fate, also known as Olifant, is an Object of Power capable of ushering in the end or beginning of worlds.
History[]
Long ago, the Captain of the Iron Galleon, a Melnibonéan outcast named Dyvim Ka'aand, acquired the Horn of Fate. Lady Myshella sent Earl Aubec of Malador on a quest to the Iron Galleon to take it from him. With the help of Jhary-a-Conel and Whiskers, he succeeded. He then gave it to Myshella, who safely hid it away in the future.
It became the olifant of Roland, Champion of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charlemagne the Frank. Legend has it that he blew the horn with his final breath and died on the battlefield. The horn was entombed with him, and his people hoped that one day, Roland would rise again to fight for them once more. And indeed, when Elric traveled there from the past to collect the horn, Roland rose from his grave to fight him for it, but Elric rendered him slain once more.
Elric returned to his world with the horn and blew it thrice. The first roused the Phoorn from their slumber for the final fight against the forces of Chaos. The second summoned the Lords of Law to fight the Chaos Lords. The third summoned an image of the Cosmic Balance to usher in a new age upon the world.
Later, during the events of Michael Moorcock's Multiverse, Duke Elric blew the horn, "Enabling the mathematics of the heart to reduce the ultimate equation to a single elegiac note—creating an unrepeatable moment of absolute harmony—a single chance of redemption for the entire multiverse—and all living creatures throughout the endless glory of existence."
During the events of Elric: The Balance Lost, Elric took the horn from the Machinoix and blew it to open a portal between worlds. He carried it with him throughout the rest of the story until he and his fellow Eternal Champions attempted to use it to repair the Grand Balance.
The yellow war-horn of Ymryl, granted to him by Lord Arioch, is said to be "brother to the Horn of Fate."
